Tailored learning support
We know every child learns in their own way. That’s why we provide tailored learning support to help each student do their best. Our programs meet different student needs. This includes high potential and gifted students, students with additional needs or disability, and those who need wellbeing support. At our school, your child will get the support they need to succeed.
At Concord West Public School, we are deeply committed to ensuring that all students, including those with disability and additional learning and support needs, are able to participate in education on the same basis as their peers at every stage of school life. This commitment is guided by the Disability Standards for Education (2005) and the NSW Department of Education’s Inclusive Education Policy for students with disability.
We recognise that some students may require personalised adjustments and support plans to thrive at school. These supports are developed collaboratively, in consultation with students, their families, teachers, and relevant school staff to ensure that each child’s individual learning needs are met.
We value the vital roles played by parents and carers, school staff, allied professionals, the wider community, and most importantly, the students themselves. Together, we work to create an inclusive, supportive, and empowering learning environment for every student.
A welcoming community
Our school is a place where students from all backgrounds feel safe, respected and part of the community. We value diversity and fairness. Your child will learn and grow in a school that celebrates who they are. We prepare students to be confident, well-rounded global citizens.
At Concord West Public School, approximately 89% of students are learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). This means many of our students come from diverse cultural and language backgrounds, which makes our school a vibrant and welcoming community. We also value and encourage students to keep using and developing their first language because being bilingual is a great strength that supports their thinking skills and helps them stay connected to their culture.
Our specialist EAL/D teachers work closely with classroom teachers, school leaders, and other experts to make sure every student who is learning English gets the support they need. We use proven, evidence-based teaching methods to help students at all stages of learning English. One important approach we use is called explicit teaching, where teachers clearly explain and demonstrate language skills so students can understand and use them confidently.
The support for EAL/D students can take many forms, including withdrawing small groups that target the explicit teaching of speaking, reading and writing skills so that students can participate more confidently and effectively in all learning activities.
Our school also provides Italian community language lessons for students K-4. Students are also able to access Chinese, Mongolian and Finnish community language classes outside of school hours. Throughout the school year we celebrate the cultural diversity of our community in various ways, including Korean Cultural Immersion day, Mongolian day, Harmony Day and Languages Day.
Concord West Public School is dedicated to creating a supportive and inclusive language learning environment where all students can thrive.
An inclusive education
Concord West Public School is proud to offer three specialist Inclusive Classes that provide additional learning support for students with autism. These classes are designed to create a supportive, engaging, and structured environment where every child can thrive.
Each of our inclusive classes is led by a dedicated classroom teacher and is supported by a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO). With a maximum of seven students per class, we ensure that every child receives personalised attention and learning support.
Our teaching practices are evidence-based and tailored to meet the diverse learning and wellbeing needs of our students. We prioritise multi-sensory, hands-on learning experiences that foster curiosity, independence, and confidence.
Students in our Inclusive Classes are active members of the school community. They participate in whole school events, assemblies and sporting initiatives, and have opportunities to join mainstream classes to extend their academic learning and social connections.
Through our Inclusive Classes, we are committed to building strong foundations for lifelong learning while nurturing each student’s strengths and abilities.
A focus on student wellbeing
At Concord West Public School, we are deeply committed to the explicit teaching and consistent modelling of positive behaviour. Our focus is on creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where every student is supported to engage fully in their learning and to thrive as a valued member of the school community.
We believe that fostering positive behaviour is essential to student success. Through high expectations, clear guidelines, and intentional teaching, we empower students to become safe, respectful learners. Our approach is grounded in the principles of positive behaviour support, trauma-informed and inclusive practices, and social-emotional learning, all of which are embedded in our everyday teaching and school culture.
Concord West Public School takes a strong, proactive stance against all forms of bullying, including online (cyber) bullying. We are unwavering in our commitment to maintaining a learning environment where all students feel safe, respected, and valued. Our staff are dedicated to implementing evidence-informed strategies that actively prevent bullying and promote a positive school climate.
We foster a culture of inclusion, belonging, and mutual respect, where diversity is celebrated and positive relationships are at the core of school life. Every member of our community—students, staff, and families—plays an essential role in upholding a culture where bullying is not tolerated, whether in-person or online.
Our commitment extends beyond response; we focus on prevention through education, intervention, and ongoing support. When bullying behaviours do occur, school staff act promptly and effectively to support those affected and to guide students towards more respectful ways of interacting.
Together, we are building a school where all children feel empowered to learn, grow, and connect in a safe and supportive environment.
“The teachers, staff and families at Concord West Public School are very welcoming and genuine. Teachers and school events are well organised and run at a high standard. We have a great school community and families love to get involved in school events. The children have many opportunities to participate and excel in extracurricular programs. My children love the music, sports, public speaking and debating programs.”
